Spring cleaning with the whole family doesn’t have to be a chore. There are plenty of fun and creative ways to get your kids involved in the housework. Take a look at these helpful tips below:
- Assign tasks that are age-appropriate
Before giving your kids a task to do, make sure that the task isn’t too physically or mentally difficult for their age. You don’t want your kids to get discouraged when they struggle to complete the task.
- Come up with a fun game
The best way to make spring cleaning fun for kids is to make a game (or several!) out of it. Here are a few suggestions:
- Pick up the toys – If your kids’ toys are lying around the house, set a timer, place a box in the middle of a room, and have them pick up as many toys as they can before the timer runs out. You can even join the game by picking up your own things that are scattered around the house.
- Collect the dust bunnies – Let your kids wear old socks and collect the largest dust bunny with their feet. They can skate on the floors, check the corners of each room, and look for dust bunnies under the bed.
- Match the socks – Looking for the matching sock can get pretty tiring, especially if you have plenty of pairs of socks to sort through. Another contest that you can play with your kids is to match the most pairs of socks. A point is only counted if the matching pair is rolled up properly.
- Find the expired item – First, teach your kids how to read the expiration dates on food products. Once they already know how, ask them to play detective and find all the expired products in the refrigerator and pantry.
- Arrange in alphabetical order – Organize your spice drawers by having your kids sort them out alphabetically. Aside from having an organized spice drawer, your kids also get to practice their reading and sorting skills!
- Play upbeat music
Listening to music while spring cleaning is one of the best ways to make the time pass quickly. Put on today’s top hits or ask your kids to play their favorite songs. Singing and dancing while cleaning makes the whole thing fun and memorable. And before you know it, your whole house will be good as new!
- Set a timer
Using a timer is a great way to motivate your kids to finish their task. Just make sure to break their task into manageable chunks of 5 to 15-minutes so that they don’t get intimidated. You can even reward them with a small prize if they finish their task before the timer ends.
- Give regular but short breaks
To keep kids focused and productive on their task, make sure to give regular but short breaks every now and then. This prevents them from getting bored or overworked.
